(Active since: Sep 1, 2006)
OIT would like to inform you of a new policy change for hardware/software maintenance that affects ETSU-owned computers, laptops, printers, and peripherals.
Computers and laptops over 6 years of age are considered by industry standards as obsolete. In this environment, history has shown that the total cost of ownership of maintaining a system this old is very high. It negates the functional use of the system.
Since fiscal year 03/04, the Computer Replacement Initiative has provided and installed over $1,249,000 worth of computers across campus.
With that being taken into consideration, ETSU/OIT will not support any desktop or laptop computer (and associated peripherals) that are over 6 years of age at the time of the reported problem. This will include any software or hardware maintenance to those systems. If the department desires to maintain the equipment, they will be responsible for obtaining and funding such support.
In order to fall within the timeframe of a hardware maintenance contract extension, this policy will go into affect on September 1, 2006, with no exceptions or exemptions. Due to circumstances beyond our control, we were unable to disseminate this information sooner, but hope that your ITGC representative has previously shared this informed with you.
