Ordering computers for department use

eBucs is used to view and order supported computer systems. Select Dell computers are used for standard PC desktops and laptops. Select Apple computers are used for Mac desktops and laptops. The systems shown in eBucs are supported by OIT. If you don't have access to eBucs, please contact the Office of Procurement.

All computer purchases must be approved by OIT. If for some reason you feel that none of the standard computers will meet your needs, you may submit a request for variance. The request for variance will be reviewed by OIT and you will be notified whether the variance was granted or not.

Available software for ETSU computers

All OIT-supported PCs should come with the following software:

  • Microsoft Windows
  • Microsoft Office
  • An FTP client
  • A PDF reader
  • PrimoPDF (to create PDFs of other documents)
  • Symantec Endpoint Protection (antivirus software)

If you're missing one of those programs or are having difficulties with one misbehaving, please contact the Helpdesk. Please have the ETSU number of the computer ready. The ETSU number can be found on either the top or front of a desktop tower or on the bottom of a laptop.

SPSS, SAS, Minitab and Visual Studio are available for installation on supported systems upon request. Licenses for other Microsoft software products are available for purchase. Please contact the Helpdesk with the program(s) that you wish to order. We'll get you pricing and ordering information. Once the license information has been received, OIT will install the software.

Apple Macintosh computers should come with MacOS X, Microsoft Office and Symantec antivirus software.

Adobe Software

The TBR has a contract to purchase licenses for Adobe programs such as Acrobat Pro, Photoshop, InDesign, Dreamweaver and more at reduced prices. Departments must purchase a license for each desired software package for each computer the programs are to be installed on. You can view pricing and ordering information here.

Access to the Q:, S: and T: drives

The Q: drive is a place on the server that allows faculty and staff to store files that are only accessible by them. You can access the Q: drive from practically any machine you're logged into that's connected to the ETSU network. Each employee should have a folder available for them. Each user has a storage limit of 500MB.

The S: drive is a place on the server that allows for departments, except for College of Medicine, to share files with its employees. The T: drive is the equivalent of the S: drive for the College of Medicine. Access to the different folders is controlled by security groups. If you need access to a folder on the S: drive, have your supervisor contact the Helpdesk and request access for you. Employees of the College of Medicine should contact Daniel McLellan to request access to a folder on the T: drive.

If any of these network drives aren't showing up, which is common for departmental account logins, you can manually set up connections to them. Here are the network paths that you'll need to reference during the configuration.

Drive Path
Q: \\etsufs1\users\username (where 'username' is your username)
S: \\etsufs1\departments
T: \\etsufs2

If you're using a PC, here's how to map a network drive.

  1. Click on the Start button, right-click on 'Computer' (or 'My Computer' in Windows XP) and choose "Map Network Drive"
  2. In the Drive: box, select the drive that you're wanting to map.
  3. In the Folder box, type in the appropriate path value from the table above.
  4. Ensure that the box that says "Reconnect at logon" is checked and click on Finish. The connection should be established and a window should come up showing the contents of the drive. You can close the window if you wish and you'll still have access to the drive later.

If you're using a Mac, here's how to set up a network drive.

  1. Click on the Go menu and choose "Connect to server"
  2. For the Q: or S: drive, type in smb://etsufs1.etsu.edu. For the T: drive, type in smb://etsufs2.etsu.edu.
  3. Click on Connect
  4. You may be asked to select a share. Choose Users for the Q: drive or Departments for the S: drive. For each of those, you may have to search for the folder that you're looking for.

If you get an "Access denied" message when trying to access a folder on the S: or T: drive, most likely your account is not a member of the appropriate security group. S: drive requests should come to the Helpdesk. T: drive access should be directed to Daniel McLellan.


Software for personal use

Students, faculty and staff are able to order software such as Microsoft Windows (upgrade version), Microsoft Office, SPSS and other programs for personal use. The site to go to is http://etsu.onthehub.com/

OIT does not have any access to answer questions about orders, damaged media or lost product keys. These inquiries have to be done through the eAcademy web site. Their help page is available here or by clicking on the Help link at the top of their page.

Antivirus software is available for students, faculty and staff to install on one computer. More information is available along with download links at http://antivirus.etsu.edu/.

Ordering computers for personal use

Students, faculty and staff are able to order Dell PCs and Apple Macintosh computers at a discount for personal use. For Dell PCs, you can visit http://www.dell.com/etsu. Orders for Apple computers are made through the Apple Education Store.
